These trees, which seem to be used in landscaping EVERYWHERE, have been blooming for the past month or so. Sadly, they seem to have finished up in the last few days. But while they were in bloom, their incredibly sweet and fruity fragrance wafted through the air like perfume. It took me a little while to pinpoint the source, because the flowers are really tiny, but then again, the tree is covered in sprays of them, so it didn't take too long to figure out.
I discovered that the Japanese name is "Kinmokusei." My dictionary shows that as "fragrant olive" and Wikipedia further offers "sweet olive," "tea olive" and "sweet osmanthus" as alternative translations. However, just like a rose, "by any other name, it still smells as sweet."
If you're thinking of updating your landscaping, I sincerely recommend one or two kinmokusei plants. You won't regret it!
