Itadakimasu

Well, I was in a bit of a rush this morning - I'm still not 100% up to speed with the homework load - so I didn't have a chance to post until now.  But that doesn't mean I didn't have time to think about what I would post and to snap a few pictures as well.

In Japan when one sits down to a meal, before you begin to eat it's polite to say "Itadakimasu" which means - literally - "I receive"; or, more generally, "Thank you for the meal."  I thought I'd share what I'm saying itadakimasu for on an average day with you.

Keep in mind that a) I have about 20 minutes tops in the morning to put together both my breakfast and my bento lunch, and b) I'm trying to eat healthy (so no shortcuts with yummy pre-made things from the local store).  So here's what I had for breakfast this morning + what I fixed as my bento to take with me.

Breakfast:  rice with dried purple shiso (a pungent herb) seasoning and grilled mackeral.
Lunch:  rice with pickled plum paste accompanied by stirfried komatsuna (leafy green something between spinach & mustard in taste) with garlic and a bit of chicken seasoned with salt & pepper.  Tomato and black sesame seeds to garnish.

Hmmm, lunch certainly looks prettier than breakfast!  Both were tasty, though. :)

What did you have for breakfast/lunch today?

  2. Mmmm, no...but it probably was tasty. :) I still remember the pub you took me to for lunch...probably wasn't that healthy, either, but it sure was good! ;)
