Parking Solutions

So, what do you do when you live in a house with parking for one car, but you happen to own two?

Quite clever, I think!  And it's not only in homes you see these hydraulic lift "double decker" type parking solutions, but in public lots, too.  I particularly like the vertical parking garages that are just about 1-2 cars wide (but many stories tall).  They have a circular ferris-wheel-like system with a platform for each car.  So you drive your car in, stop & park, and get out.  Then the mechanism rotates your car up and leaves a fresh, empty platform for the next customer.  Sorry I don't have a photo of one of these; it would be easier to show you than describe it, I'm sure!  Oh, and by the way? That platform your car is parked on often rotates (like a lazy susan) so that when it's time to leave your car can be adjusted to facing outward for easy exiting.  If the platform itself doesn't rotate, then there's a rotating panel located in the floor of the entryway immediately in front of the garage itself that serves the same purpose.

As for plain ol' parking lots, they have a nifty mechanism to make sure people pay, and pay in full.  When you drive into the space there's an electronic sensor that causes a flap to rise up between your front and back wheels that is impossible to drive over.  It doesn't recede until after you've paid the electronic parking meter in full.

So there's parking in Japan for you.
